DUI: Drawing Under the Influence – Prolouge

Category : blog, DUI · No Comments · by October 16, 2015

For a long time I have wanted to talk about the artists that have influenced and inspired me. It’s not a hard list to assemble and many of my influences are exceptionally obvious. Like most artist that do what I do, pop culture behemoths like Disney and Marvel Comics top the list while a healthy sprinkling of illustration pioneers like Alfonse Mucha and J. C. Leyendecker round out the more classical inspiration. I love talking art and artists (almost as much as drawing) and I love learning more about those that inspire me and those that inspire others.

I sat thinking about sitting down and writing many times and it always seemed like such a daunting task. The collecting of images, the back stories, my story of discovery and so on. It felt so overwhelming… That is, until I simply decided to tackle one icon at a time. This made the work manageable and makes a ton of sense for the depth that I want to give each piece.

This is merely a kick off and a promise for a post every 2 weeks about those that made me love drawing, and those that I chipped little pieces off of to assemble my style. Like I mentioned earlier, Disney and Marvel, Mucha and Leyendecker will be represented along with the king of fantasy art, Frazetta and the guys at Mad and the lords of lowbrow, Coop and Rockin’ Jellybean but then there are also my friends and contemporaries like Matt Siren, Josh Bernstein, Brian Ewing and more.

I can’t wait to dig in and explore the art and artist that made me me.
